Soundbone Community Choirs
The Potluck Singers
The Potluck Singers is a community choir consisting of singers and musicians who have been volunteer performing in the St John’s area over 30 years. Musician Eric West has been directing and accompanying the group from the beginning. The Singers perform a variety of styles of music throughout the year at nursing homes, hospitals and community events.
Occasionally the Potluck Singers collaborate with other musicians for special performances and community events. In 2015-2016, with funding from the Bruneau Centre for Excellence in Choral Music, the group took part in a series of choral workshops organized by the Soundbone Foundation called Songs of Comfort and Joy. Vocal instructor Jean Hewson taught members of the group several choral arrangements of Newfoundland Christmas songs, culminating in a performance at the Folk Arts Society’s 2016 Wassail, an annual fundraising event held in St John’s. In 2006 ten members of the Potluck Singers developed a program of Newfoundland folk songs and did a week-long tour of Ireland, performing at hospices, drop-in centres and group homes throughout the country.
